Short-handed Capitals head back to Carolina

Washington visits Raleigh on Tuesday short-handed, with no starting goalie named for either team.

Capitals

The Washington Capitals play the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, with puck drop at 6:45 p.m. ET in a Metro Division matchup. The game streams nationally on ESPN+ and airs regionally in Washington on Monumental Sports Network. Read more: Capitals Hurricanes preview

Washington is 3-2-0 after five games, including a 5-3 home loss to Seattle on Sunday. Alex Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season in that game, beating Kraken goaltender Joey Daccord, who finished with 33 saves. Logan Thompson made 22 saves in the loss.

Carolina enters at 5-1-1 and has won five straight since an Oct. 2 loss to Washington, outscoring opponents 25-11 over the streak. The Hurricanes beat Chicago 5-2 on Saturday and Philadelphia 4-1 on Sunday.

A short-handed Capitals team now travels to Raleigh against a rival it has already beaten once this season.

Injury list for both sides

Pierre-Luc Dubois has been out with an illness since this past weekend and won't make the trip to Raleigh. Ahead of Sunday's game against Seattle, coach Spencer Carbery said it was "too early to tell" when Dubois would return.

Matt Roy has missed four straight games with a lower-body injury and has been skating on his own. Carbery called Roy's recovery "progressing." Rasmus Sandin remains on long-term injured reserve after right knee surgery and isn't expected back until late December.

Carolina's absence runs deeper up front. Seth Jarvis, one of Carolina's top offensive forwards, had shoulder surgery in June and is not expected back until around Oct. 24, according to ESPN's injury listing. Center Jordan Staal is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

No starting goalie named

Neither team has named a starter. Washington has split time between Logan Thompson, who is 3-1-0 with a .902 save percentage and a 2.78 goals-against average through four starts, and Charlie Lindgren, who has made one start with a .931 save percentage and a 2.08 goals-against average.

Carolina's Brandon Bussi has a .871 save percentage over four games. Pyotr Kochetkov has a .912 mark and is unbeaten in three starts.

DraftKings has Carolina as a 1.5-goal favorite on the puck line, priced at +136. Washington is +1.5 at -162, according to ESPN's odds data. The total sits at 6.5 goals, with the over priced at +105 and the under at -125. On the moneyline, Carolina is favored at -162, with Washington at +136.

The two teams have already met once this season, and Washington won that game. The Capitals beat the defending Stanley Cup champion Hurricanes 5-2 in the season opener on Oct. 2, with Alex Tuch scoring twice in his Washington debut and Ovechkin picking up an assist on the opening goal.

Washington returns home Wednesday to face Montreal, the second half of a back-to-back that starts with Tuesday's trip to Raleigh.
