The Washington Capitals lost 5-3 to the Seattle Kraken at Capital One Arena on Sunday, squandering a tie game in the third period despite outshooting Seattle 36-27 for the night. Washington falls to 3-2-0. Seattle improves to 4-2-0. Read more: Kraken score twice late to beat Capitals at home.

Alex Ovechkin scored the Capitals' second goal, his first of the season and the 930th regular-season goal of his career. He is still chasing Wayne Gretzky's all-time record in what Washington has said will be his final NHL season. Ovechkin's goal, assisted by Ilya Protas and Aliaksei Protas, put the Capitals ahead 2-1 at 16:47 of the first period.

Kaapo Kakko opened the scoring for Seattle at 6:06 of the first on a rebound off Logan Thompson. Jordan Kyrou tied it 1-1 for Washington at 11:41, taking a cross-ice feed from Cole Hutson for his first goal with the Capitals. Jordan Eberle answered for Seattle late in the period to make it 2-2 after 20 minutes.

Frederick Gaudreau put the Kraken ahead 3-2 at 13:24 of the second period, assisted by Ryan Winterton. Washington did not score again until the third.

Third period slips away

Boone Jenner tied the game 3-3 just 46 seconds into the third, his second straight game with a goal. The tie lasted nearly 14 minutes.

Jared McCann put Seattle ahead for good with 5:27 left in regulation, cutting to the middle of the ice for a low wrist shot past Thompson. Winterton added a breakaway goal with 2:40 remaining for the final margin.

Washington's shot advantage did not carry over to the stat that decided the game. The Capitals also finished with 20 giveaways to Seattle's 14. Both teams went 0 for 2 on the power play, so special teams were not the difference.

Tom Wilson led a physical night with seven hits, and Washington out-hit Seattle 31-13 for the game. The Capitals also won the faceoff battle, taking 34 of 66 draws.

The goaltending was.

Seattle's Joey Daccord stopped 33 of 36 shots for a .917 save percentage, including 17 saves in the third period alone. Thompson stopped 22 of 27 for a .815 mark, his first start allowing five goals since April.

Capitals coach Spencer Carbery put the loss on his team's puck management. "We're just making too many mistakes, a lot of mistakes with the puck, poor decisions," Carbery said after the game.

Injuries and the next game

Washington played without center Pierre-Luc Dubois, who missed the game with an illness. Defenseman Matt Roy also sat out with a lower-body injury, with the team targeting a return around Tuesday. Rasmus Sandin remains on injured reserve with a knee injury.

The Capitals have no game Monday. They play again Tuesday at Carolina, with Dubois and Roy both hoping to return to the lineup. Seattle leads the season series 1-0, with the teams meeting once more this season, on Dec. 10 in Seattle.
