It's Go Time: Godzilla's College Football Picks for Saturday
Eight plays for Sept. 26, with home dogs in Knoxville and the Coliseum, a monster number in Columbus, and the Best Bet on West Virginia at home against Oklahoma State.
Godzilla Game DayWASHINGTON, DC. College football Saturdays are not about betting every game on the board. That is how you get buried.
The mission is simple: find the numbers that are wrong, identify the teams with the matchup edge, and attack before the market catches up.
This week, Godzilla has eight plays. We've got home dogs, road dogs, favorites, one monster number, and a Best Bet sitting right in Morgantown. Let's get after it.
Best Bet of the Week: West Virginia -1.5 over Oklahoma State. This is my favorite play on the board. West Virginia has the formula I want in a short-spread home game: run the football, control tempo, stay ahead of the chains and make the opponent survive four quarters in Morgantown. Coach Rich Rod is back, and no couch in Morgantown is safe.
Oklahoma State can create problems through the air, but if WVU controls the line of scrimmage and keeps the Cowboys from turning this into a track meet, the Mountaineers should own the second half. At -1.5, we are not asking for domination. We are asking West Virginia to win the football game. I believe they do. Godzilla Best Bet: West Virginia -1.5.
Baylor -9.5 over Colorado. Colorado has not shown enough offensive consistency for me to trust the Buffaloes in this spot. Now they walk into Waco against a Baylor team capable of controlling the game on both sides of the football. Baylor lost 17-16 against a very good Auburn team. The danger for Colorado comes if Baylor jumps ahead early. The Buffaloes got waxed last week against Northwestern, 41-7. Once Colorado has to abandon balance and start chasing points, this matchup can get away from them quickly. I see Baylor creating separation in the second half. Godzilla pick: Baylor -9.5.
Tennessee +4.5 over Texas. Forget the rankings for a minute. Texas walking into Neyland Stadium is not the same thing as Texas playing this game on a neutral field. Their amazing 21-point comeback last week has letdown written all over it. Tennessee has the crowd, the physicality and enough offensive firepower to keep this thing inside one possession deep into the fourth quarter. Plus President Trump is there. The Vols do not have to be the better team for 60 minutes. They just have to make Texas uncomfortable. Give me 4.5 points in Knoxville all day long. Godzilla pick: Tennessee +4.5.
Ole Miss +3.5 over Florida. This is a pure value play. Ole Miss has enough quarterback play and enough explosiveness to answer Florida score for score. This Rebels team is really fast, and really good. Florida is dangerous at home and will absolutely test the Rebels on the ground, but I do not see enough separation between these teams to lay more than a field goal. This has late-possession SEC chaos written all over it. Three and a half points could be gold. Godzilla pick: Ole Miss +3.5.
USC +2.5 over Oregon. I want the home dog with offensive upside. Forget USC's points allowed. They played their second-string defensive unit in both second halves. Oregon has plenty of talent, but USC has enough speed and enough big-play ability to turn this into a four-quarter shootout. Oregon is a paper team. They are not as good as their press clippings! The Trojans do not need to dominate. They need to protect the football, hit explosive plays and force Oregon to play under pressure on the road. The Coliseum will rock again! If this game comes down to the final possession, I want the points. Godzilla pick: USC +2.5.
Iowa +5.5 over Michigan. This is going to be ugly. Perfect. Iowa loves ugly. The Hawkeyes want to shorten the game, make every possession matter and turn this into a wrestling match disguised as football. Michigan may absolutely win. But winning by six or more against a team that specializes in dragging opponents into low-possession chaos is a different challenge. Give me the miserable, painful, beautiful 5.5 points. Godzilla pick: Iowa +5.5.
LSU -10 over Texas A&M. Death Valley at night changes football games. This team is mad, angry and out for blood. Texas A&M has talent, but talent does not automatically translate when the crowd is screaming, the pass rush is coming and every mistake gets magnified. Plus they got mashed by Kentucky. Seriously? If LSU loses and goes 0-2 in the SEC, the whole state of Louisiana will run Kiffin off the Bayou. LSU has the ability to create explosive plays and force A&M into obvious passing situations. If the Tigers get ahead early, the atmosphere can take over. This feels like a game LSU can break open late. Monster Mash. Godzilla pick: LSU -10.
Ohio State -28 over Illinois. Yes, 28 is a massive number. Yes, I am laying it. Ohio State has the kind of depth advantage that shows up after halftime. They are a very angry football team, and the Illini become their punching bag. Illinois may hang around for a quarter or even a half, but once the Buckeyes start rotating fresh bodies and creating short fields, the avalanche can come quickly. The only real question is whether Ohio State keeps attacking with a big lead. I think they do. Godzilla pick: Ohio State -28.
The Godzilla Card. West Virginia -1.5 over Oklahoma State. Baylor -9.5 over Colorado. Tennessee +4.5 over Texas. Ole Miss +3.5 over Florida. USC +2.5 over Oregon. Iowa +5.5 over Michigan. LSU -10 over Texas A&M. Ohio State -28 over Illinois. Best Bet: West Virginia -1.5.
