Capitals host Devils in Saturday matinee
Washington tries to keep its strong start at home going against New Jersey while managing illness at center and an injury on the back end.
CapitalsNew Jersey visits Washington for a 1 p.m. ET matinee Saturday at Capital One Arena. The Capitals enter at 4-3-0, with a 3-1-0 record at home, while the Devils are also 4-3-0 but just 1-1-0 on the road. NHL Network has the national broadcast, with MNMT carrying the game in Washington and MSGSN in New Jersey. Read more: Capitals host Devils in Saturday matinee
Washington is a -125 favorite on the moneyline and -1.5 on the puck line, according to ESPN's odds data, with the total set at 6.5 goals. The line opened at Washington -148 with a 5.5 total before moving to those numbers.
The Capitals' most recent result was a 5-4 win over Montreal on Oct. 14, their third victory in their last five games. Alex Tuch scored twice and added an assist in that one. Charlie Lindgren stopped 25 of 29 shots to get the win.
Short center group shrinks further
Washington will be without center Pierre-Luc Dubois for a fourth straight game Saturday as he continues to deal with an illness. Coach Spencer Carbery said this week that Dubois is starting to feel better. Carbery said Dubois is expected to rejoin the team next week, but needs a practice return first.

Justin Sourdif, the other center dealing with an illness, did not skate in Friday's practice and is questionable for Saturday. Ethen Frank has taken shifts down the middle in the interim, and a call-up remains an option if Sourdif cannot play.
Defenseman Matt Roy, who missed six straight games with a lower-body injury, returned to practice in a regular jersey for the first time after being cleared for contact. He skated on an extra pairing, and his status for Saturday remains unclear. Rasmus Sandin (knee) is on long-term injured reserve, and Patrick Thomas (upper body) is also out.
New Jersey has its own absences. Forward Luke Evangelista is day-to-day with an illness, and the Devils are already missing Connor Brown (lower body), Nick Bjugstad (pectoral) and Seamus Casey (knee), all on injured reserve.
No goalie confirmed for Saturday
Neither team has named a starting goaltender. Washington can turn to Logan Thompson, who is 3-2 with a .904 save percentage, or Lindgren, who sits at 1-1 and .898 after the Montreal start. New Jersey's options are Jake Allen, 3-1 at .885, and Nico Daws, 1-2 at .857. Daily Faceoff projected Lindgren and Allen as probable starters, though neither is confirmed.
Washington has managed four wins already without a full complement at center, leaning on secondary scoring to cover the gap. Tuch and Kyrou combined for five points in the win over Montreal alone.
If Roy can't go Saturday, Washington returns to the pairings it used in Friday's practice: Chychrun with Liljegren, Fehervary with Desharnais, and Hutson with Holl.
