The Play That Ended Achane's Season

De'Von Achane tore his ACL against Kansas City, and now Miami's backfield decides who carries fantasy rosters into Week 4.

De'Von Achane planted his left foot to cut right in the first quarter Sunday, and the leg gave way.

The Dolphins running back had carried three times for 17 yards before a Kansas City defender finished the tackle. He did not return. Miami lost 24-10 to fall to 0-3. By Monday the diagnosis was official: a torn ACL, ending Achane's season months after he signed a four-year, $64 million extension.

Coach Jeff Hafley did not wait on imaging to sound the alarm. "To be very honest with you, it does not sound very optimistic at this moment, but I can't give you any other details until I have them," he said after the game. Miami placed Achane on injured reserve Monday, confirming the tear.

Achane leaves the 2026 season with 127 yards on 34 carries and 49 yards on seven catches, a Pro Bowl talent reduced to a three-game cameo for a team that built its offense around his speed.

Backfield now belongs to two

Ollie Gordon II took the workload immediately, still adjusting to it. The second-year Oklahoma State product carried 17 times for 41 yards against Kansas City and scored Miami's first touchdown, after totaling three carries combined in the first two weeks.

Jaylen Wright, the presumed backup, did not play a snap. He sat out the same game with a stinger and a foot injury, leaving Gordon as the lone healthy back on the roster. Hafley called the job ahead shared, not settled.

Fantasy analysts do not agree on which back matters more for Week 4. Wright has forced more missed tackles and gained more yards after contact per carry than Gordon since last season, numbers that point to more explosiveness once he is healthy. Gordon has the fresher legs and the larger recent workload. One approach splits the difference: let the waiver wire bid up Gordon's price, then add Wright and wait on his health.

Neither back inherits a clean situation. Quarterback Malik Willis led Miami in rushing against Kansas City with 56 yards on nine carries, a sign of an offense still searching for its shape. General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan is expected to at least discuss outside additions, though Hafley framed the moment as a test of depth first. "This is a resilient group, and everyone will have to pitch in," he said.

Two backs, no clear leader

Achane was not the only marquee name to fall out of Week 4 lineups. Tampa Bay's Baker Mayfield dislocated his thumb in a loss to Minnesota and will miss at least three games. But no injury this week moves more rosters than the one in Miami. Gordon and Wright combined for six carries over the season's first two weeks; between them, they now decide what comes next.

For now, the only certainty in Miami's backfield is that Achane will not be back this season.
