Godzilla's college football picks for Saturday, October 3

John Fredericks breaks down four games on the board, from a West Virginia-Iowa State tackling problem to the Miami-Clemson line move.

West Virginia at Iowa State: Iowa State -2.5

This game comes down to one question: can West Virginia make Iowa State play quarterback instead of allowing the Cyclones to win with defense and the run game? Read more: Godzilla college football picks

The WVU defense collapsed in the second half last week.

Iowa State's defense looks good statistically — 272.5 yards allowed per game and only 16 points — but the 29 missed tackles Jimmy Rogers acknowledged against Utah are a flashing warning light against Michael Hawkins. Hawkins changes pursuit angles. One missed fit against a quarterback with his speed becomes 20 yards instead of four.

The Cyclones' bigger problem is offensive efficiency. Jaylen Raynor is completing only 54.3 percent, Iowa State is near the bottom of the Big 12 in total offense, and that 31.9 percent third-down conversion rate is brutal. If WVU can win first down, Iowa State gets forced into the part of its offense it least wants to rely upon: obvious passing downs.

The player WVU has to bottle up is Aiden Flora. He is averaging 95.5 rushing yards. If Flora is getting five and six yards on first down, Iowa State controls the game, protects Raynor and lets its defense take over. If Flora is sitting around three yards per carry early, I like WVU's chances substantially more.

There's another angle I really like: Iowa State keeps rotating personnel and formations. That makes pre-snap recognition difficult, but it also means offensive cohesion can suffer. Against an aggressive WVU defense, disguise and pressure can create negative plays.

Pick: WVU +2.5.

Alabama at Mississippi State: Alabama -5.5

This is the most fascinating game on the board.

Mississippi State is not some cute 4-0 story. Its offense has legitimate efficiency. Kamario Taylor has 1,192 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and only two interceptions, while State ranks among the national leaders in rushing success rate. That balance is exactly what you want against Alabama, because it prevents the Tide from simply teeing off with the defensive front.

Alabama's counterpunch is Keelon Russell. More than 1,100 passing yards, 11 total touchdowns, and he is creating explosive plays. Mississippi State's secondary is respectable, but the Bulldogs have questions generating pressure. If Russell gets a clean pocket, Alabama can score in chunks.

The injury sheet pushes me toward points. Alabama is missing multiple defensive contributors at every level — defensive backs, linebackers and defensive line. Against Taylor and Jeff Lebby's tempo-based offense, depth matters enormously, because Mississippi State forces defenders to repeatedly tackle in space.

The biggest strategic battle: Mississippi State on early downs. If State keeps averaging positive EPA on first and second down, Taylor avoids Alabama's exotic third-down pressure package. That gives the Bulldogs a legitimate path to score 30-plus.

Alabama has scored at least 45 in every game. Mississippi State averages north of 40. I don't expect either offense to completely disappear. Historical dominance — Alabama has won 16 straight in this series — matters psychologically, but it matters much less to the handicap than the current quarterback play and Mississippi State's rushing efficiency. Alabama has crushed every opponent this season in the second half. What changes?

Pick: Alabama -5.5.

Miami at Clemson: Miami -16.5

The betting market is screaming something here.

Miami opened around -18.5 and the number has been bet down toward -16.5 despite Miami attracting the majority of tickets. That suggests larger wagers have been taking Clemson.

Let Las Vegas pick the game for you. It is begging you to bet Clemson. I understand why — Death Valley, night game, double-digit home dog, Clemson's defense.

But the actual quarterback matchup is heavily tilted toward Miami. Darian Mensah has 1,211 yards, 14 touchdowns and zero interceptions. That is elite ball security combined with explosive production. Clemson freshman Tait Reynolds has one passing touchdown against two interceptions through his early starts, with less than 400 yards.

That makes it extremely difficult to envision Clemson trading touchdowns with Miami if the Hurricanes reach the mid-to-high 20s. Clemson's 3-1 record is also somewhat misleading offensively. Its special teams and defensive scoring against California materially improved the final scoreboard, and that production is difficult to count on every week.

Miami gets to 30 and forces Reynolds to throw 30-plus times. Blowout. That kind of game script becomes dangerous for Clemson, because freshman quarterbacks generally become more turnover-prone when playing from behind against elite speed. The talent differential is huge. Remember the LSU game?

Pick: Miami -16.5.

Florida at Missouri: Florida -4.5

Florida's identity is becoming extremely clear: feed Jadan Baugh until somebody stops him.

Baugh has run for 100-plus yards and scored at least two touchdowns in four straight games. That is not just volume. He is creating explosive runs and forcing defenses to commit extra bodies to the box.

Missouri's concern is Ahmad Hardy's absence. Without him, Missouri becomes more dependent on Austin Simmons. Simmons has been excellent — 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions — but Florida's pass rush changes this matchup. Jayden Woods has 4.5 sacks and consistently wins one-on-one. If Missouri gets behind the chains, Florida can unleash Woods and play tighter underneath coverage.

Florida's danger is emotional and situational. The Gators just hung 52 on Ole Miss, and now they go on the road against a ranked opponent. That is exactly the type of spot where an unbeaten team can start slowly. But this is a different Florida team.

Pick: Florida -4.5.

The board, in order

1. Alabama -5.5.

2. Miami -16.5 — the quarterback mismatch is so large that Clemson may simply struggle to score enough.

3. West Virginia +2.5 — Hawkins' explosiveness attacks Iowa State's tackling problem.

4. Florida -4.5 — Baugh and Florida's pass rush eventually wear Missouri down.
